EXCLUDED

I specialise in working with education, third sector and charitable organisations. I’ve been commissioned by organisations such as Liberty, The Bar Council, The English Collective of Prostitutes, The EHRC, The Council of Europe and the Traveller Movement. I’ve worked as Media Manager for the RSA’s huge array of talks, and I’ve made films, animation projects, comic books and worked with artists, animators, and illustrators as a producer, film maker, writer and director. I’m on the Board of Trustees at The Glasgow Film Theatre and I’m a member of Together - the Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights.

I’m currently working with Scottish charities and institutions on a variety of film and co-production projects.

If you are looking for someone who understands the particular challenges and requirements of projects within education, or the third sector - I’d love to chat - in person or remotely - drop me a line

Sarah Wishart is a producer and film maker based in Glasgow but available for your projects whereever you are in the UK.

“If you tell a young person, over and over again, that you're aggressive, you're aggressive, you're aggressive, they will become aggressive. If you tell them, over and over again, that you're a leader or you can do this or you can do that, they will start to believe it in themselves.” Jordane, Excluded documentary

“Because nobody is more of an expert on these issues than the people facing them.” Betty Mayo, Movement Leader, The Advocacy Academy

I have led training within universities and colleges, and have also offered standalone training for charities and small CICs in London. My expertise includes co-production, film-making, communications strategies for non-profits.

I can deliver training for your teams and develop training to support your needs. If you’re interested in my most recent training course or would like to discuss developing something specific for your organisation - please get in touch.

Everything you wanted to know about video communications but were too afraid to ask….

This was a series of training sessions that I ran over three years, funded by the Trust for London and which covered how and why organisations should use video in their communications. They were ran online and in-person primarily from small charities working in London. Sessions were designed to assist not-for-profit organisations with campaign strategy. Many charities want to use video content but lack the relevant skills in-house. This was an opportunity to bring a particular problem a team was grappling with and I worked with them to propose some creative processes to build into their communication strategies.

“Really informative webinar and one that unexpectedly gave me the confidence to believe video and film is definitely the way forward to promote our work and message. I think lots of smaller charities will really benefit from this type of information”.

I spent time looking at a range of different formats and campaigns, talked about how to work out the right format for campaigns and how to calculate the budget for different projects. I looked at how to make sure you were being true to your organisation, creatively. I also discussed ways of being creative if you don’t have much (any?) budget, with a range of top tips and warnings!

With my background working across education and third sector, think tanks and publishing, I understand exactly the kinds of messaging you need, whether you’re a charity, a non-profit or an educational organisation. I can help you create films to start conversations. Whether you need to create something for a new campaign, enable your audience to access your resources or tell people about your events – nothing gets your message over faster than a video.

“Having Sarah's creative take on things and knowledge of techniques, equipment, and what others are doing with video was so helpful and like a breath of fresh air! As a team of 1 working part-time, it was really valuable to have this kind of input”.

The session included:

• Why video is important

• Some examples of different impactful videos

• Different forms - how much they cost and the pros and cons of using them

• We'll talk through different issues around budgets

• How to get your projects funded including sources

• The pros and cons of getting videos made if you have no budget

• Commissioning work from external organisations

The Assembling - podcast

Since the pandemic the act of coming together, to connect - with family, in making change happen or simply to experience a live event – has never felt more important.

My name is Sarah Wishart and I’m a film maker and writer. Most recently I’ve been working on coproduction film projects where affected communities are the people to talk about the issues that impact them. I’ve talked a lot to people over the last few years about ideas around connection, coproduction and change and wanted to start capturing some of these conversations in a podcast. This is that podcast – and its called the Assembling.

I’ll be talking to a range of people about their thoughts and experiences of change-making, of communities, temporary or otherwise, of the importance of connection…. basically about the moments of coming together around events like friendship, protest, activism or death.

For our first pilot episode, I talked to the incredible Martha Awojobi. Martha is CEO of JMB consulting and curator of #BAMEOnline. They dream of a world free of oppression and are working towards that dream alongside their incredible collaborators all over the world.

We started off talking about her anti-racism work in the charity sector, and ended up bouncing of a bunch of ideas including thinking about activism as radical love, romance, friendship and issues of consent in the idea of community.

“I think that if we reframed what people who are engaging in direct action are, they’re loving us, they are loving the planet, and they are putting themselves on the line so that we can have the future that we all deserve. I’m trying to bring love back into it, a really militant form of love”
