HUMAN RIGHTS MEDIA

I create human rights films, journalism and digital content that amplify voices and make complex issues accessible. My work spans podcasts, explainer films and campaigns, often developed in collaboration with advocacy organisations. Here are a selection of some of the media I’ve made either as a freelancer or working with organisations in and across the human rights sector.

PETER HOAR INTERVIEW

Peter directed and executive produced 'It's A Sin', a five-part series that followed a group of young friends as they embraced London's gay scene in the 90s and confronted the tragic effects of AIDs on that community. Created and written by Russell T. Davis, it aired on Channel 4 in January 2021, with glowing five star reviews, and had over 6.5 million viewers in the first week, making it Channel 4's biggest ever drama launch. The show's been nominated for countless awards. And in 2022. Peter won a best 'Director of Fiction' BAFTA for the show.

MARTHA AWOJOBI INTERVIEW

“I think that if we reframed what people who are engaging in direct action are doing, they’re loving us, they are loving the planet, and they are putting themselves on the line so that we can have the future that we all deserve. I’m trying to bring love back into it, a really militant form of love”

HUMAN RIGHTS CONSORTIUM SCOTLAND

If Scotland is to be a country where everyone’s human rights are protected and realised, then everyone must be able to access justice for human rights violations. Access to remedy must be affordable, accessible, effective, timely and person-centred.

But, for too many people, it is just incredibly difficult to access rights remedy. This must change.

The Human Rights Consortium Scotland wanted a short film that collated all the 13 Calls to Action to make human rights justice a reality for all

EXCLUDED

In 2020 the multi-award winning documentary ‘Excluded’ that only features the voices, opinions and solutions from young people to address school exclusion was launched.

Since it was launched on Human Rights Day in December 2020, the film has been watched over 25k times, been screened in cinemas, at film festivals, used by social workers, teachers, educational psychologists, local authorities, police and prison teams, been nominated for a Learning on Screen award

What is Community Sponsorship?

This explainer animation illustrates how Community Sponsorship in the UK was created by people like you and me, and how the movement is supported by Reset - a charity supporting the communities who welcome displaced people make a new life in the UK

THE NHS AND HUMAN RIGHTS

How do human rights and the NHS work together? We love the NHS, we also love cute animated animals, so here’s the two in one amazing video explaining how the NHS uses human rights! Dr Sarah Simons lets us in on how the right to life, privacy, freedom of belief and expression are all factors that get taken into consideration when looking after a poorly patient.

JOURNEYS THROUGH MENTAL HEALTH - COMIC

'Journeys Through Mental Health’ was a pilot project where I created EachOther’s first comic strip out of conversations with young people with lived experience of mental health issues. I worked in collaboration with Richmond Fellowship and I commissioned Sabba Khan - an incredible artist to create the illustrations which we released over a month as a digital comic and turned into short animations.

WHATS A NICE GIRL LIKE YOU DOING IN A JOB LIKE THIS

This animation was a collaborative piece of work made with the English Collective of Prostitutes. Made from a concept I had around water colours - the film was created from around 7,000 hand-painted images by animator Tom Senior, this multi award-winning film depicts two women similarly struggling to make ends meet under the immense pressure and precariousness of their respective jobs.

FAIRPLAY

“If it wasn’t for rights, people would be getting bullied all over the world”

We were commissioned by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to find out what children knew about human rights. We travelled to five different schools across the UK to ask about their thoughts on fairness, discrimination and even voting. I found four out of the five schools from the incredible Unicef Rights Respecting Schools programme.

WHAT IS PREVENT

Prevent is a controversial aspect of the government’s anti-terrorism strategy, that many argue puts at risk the rights and freedoms of people – particularly Muslims – across the UK. This film explores the issues with Prevent, the government’s review of it and why 17 human rights organisations decided to boycott that review after Sir William Shawcross was appointed to lead it. It features interviews with: Rania Hafez, senior education lecturer at the University of Greenwich, who tells us about how Prevent has impacted the education sector. Dr Shazad Amin, Deputy Chair of MEND (Muslim Engagement and Development), who provides an overall context of the issues with Prevent, and why MEND (along with 16 other organisations) signed up to the aforementioned boycott. And finally an anonymous story of a mother whose son was unfairly referred to Prevent at just 11 years old.
